Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in 1818 in Maryland, United States. During his childhood, he was enslaved to several different families and was treated cruelly. At the age of twelve, he was sent to work in Baltimore for Hugh Auld. There, he learned how to read and write, which was illegal for slaves at the time. This knowledge empowered him, and he began to develop a strong desire for freedom. In 1838, Douglass escaped slavery and eventually settled in Massachusetts. He became a prominent abolitionist and delivered many speeches detailing his experiences as a slave. His autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, published in 1845, became a best-seller and helped raise awareness about the cruelty of slavery. Douglass remained an influential figure in the abolitionist movement until his death in 1895.
